Trout-pouting in the carpark

We had a night on the town yesterday, at a friend's 21st! We both didn't have our respective other halves with us, so we could do a little rampaging. That was, until we both felt fatigued at the very late time of 12am and thus proceeded to MacDonalds for a midnight snack.

Anyway, we've got some uni assessments popping up, but we'll still be posting as regularly as possible (pretty much every day!!) so wish us luck! What's in store for this week will be some final round-ups from NYFW, a quick outfit post, and whatever else takes our fancy.

Don't do away with the head-to-toe print pant-suits just yet - it's still cool! Brocade brings a new refined spin to the print-party, and score extra kudos if you continue to clash prints as well.

They (whoever they are) say brights are now passé, but in my books (& judging by NYFW street style) block colours will never go out of style. For an Australian girl in the heat of Summer, I sure am drawn to the block-coloured outer wear a strangely large amount.

NYFW Fall Winter '12 Collections: Colour Trends

Despite the fact that it usually takes a good year or so for trends to trickle down from the runway to the Perth fashion scene, I love the fact that the showing of the new collections come just before we Southern Hemisphere folk head into the respective seasons. To keep me sane for the next few weeks whilst I live through 5:45am wake-ups and hour-long train rides, I will be doing some round-ups of what the Fall/Winter collections have to offer. First up, some colour trends.

Judging from the first 3 days of New York fashion week alone, shades of red from bright poppy to broody maroon are the go for the upcoming season! There is indeed a shade of red for everyone. I personally love maroon and will be digging out my darker pieces for this season.

Not as viral, but nonetheless popular - blue has also popped up a number of times out of the 30-odd shows that have already been. In particular, cobalt seems quite the popular choice, as well as the ever-classy navy blue.

Last but not least, as a change from the usual sea of black - winter white takes centre stage. How will you wear your white this season? Will you attain a dress, slip it in with your neutral ensemble, or wear it in a patterned variety? Team it with pewter a la St John, and if you're feeling it, white-on-white is always a winner.

Lapis Lazuli 1.0

Once again we bring you DIY Friday!

When T brought home these Lapis Lazuli stones from her China travels, I immediately thought of the magazine cover (below) that she posted here in December. After a complete fail attempt at beading them myself, I recruited lil sister to put it together for me using her gold beading wire. (She is the beading pro in this neck of the woods.)

What we used:

Round stone beads

Gold beading wire

A clasp

Pliers

Lots of beading skill!!

There are plenty of simpler ways to put this beaded necklace together if you, like me, can't do this nifty wire-work. Threading a ribbon through with a bow at the back would look really good.

T will make her necklace soon, so watch out for Lapis Lazuli 2.0!

New Year's Resolutions: Quality Over Quantity

S & I have discussed this topic at length over the past year, and it seems that our blogger pals share similar thoughts to us (see here and here). It is high time that I stopped wasting my money on pieces that are poor in construction and quality - yup, I'm talking to you, chain-store polyester!

Usually after my huge annual wardrobe clear-out, I'm tempted to restock as quickly (and as cheaply) during sale time. However, I kept my quality over quantity mantra on repeat inside my head as Simon & I browsed at David Jones. After much deliberation, I ended up walking away with two pastel jumpers and the most comfortable pair of loafers (suitable for clinical wear too!).

Pastel pink and aqua Polo RL jumpers, thanks to Simon's insistance that I should wear more girly colours.
Little does he know that pastel is IN!

True - the total cost of these three items would have equated to some sort of rabid shopping-spree at Supre, but being the material-snob that S has transformed me into, I can happily revel in my newfound investment pieces.

What is your opinion on the quality versus quantity argument? Will you be making it one of your New Year's resolutions like us?

My Latest Loot: Peplum

I have recently been poring over the Elle Collections magazine that T bought me in China. It is an absolute treasure trove of inspiration. One SS '12 trend pinpointed is the peplum silhouette.

The skirt below is a recent addition to my wear-to-hospital regime, although it is sadly a loner in the "peplum" section of my wardrobe. What a pity, I might have to buy it a friend. (What an even more pity- I have no money!)

Fringed Miniskirt - Fringe Benefits Part 2

It's DIY Friday!
Following on from our previous fringed-DIY (see it here), here's a fringed skirt to match!

Scroll down for instructions...

DIY Fringed Miniskirt

What You'll Need:
A skirt - thrift or use an old one in need of a makeover.
Sewing kit
Sewing machine
Grosgrain ribbon for the optional side-stripes
Fringe trim

Step 1:
Hem and re-fit the skirt to your liking.

Step 2: (optional)
Sew on a grosgrain ribbon to hide the large seams on the side of the skirt.
In truth, this was to hide a hole in the fabric, but I thought it looked pretty cool anyway.

Step 3:
Sew on your fringe trim using a straight or zig-zag stitch. I used a straight stitch so that it would stay inconspicuous, and did two rows of fringe trim to give it a fuller effect.

Et voila - wear it with your matching fringed singlet!

Time to go add fringing to more stuff. A clutch or a necklace, perhaps?

Tangerine Dream

It was hot and yucky on our last (and only) holiday crafternoon day, but S managed to keep herself on-trend whilst I sat around in pyjamas.

Haven't you heard?

Tangerine is IN.

Lucky for S, she has managed to accrue quite a few orange-hued pieces, which added some pops of colour to her summery blue ensemble. The easiest way to incorporate new colours into your wardrobe is by gently easing it in - do this with accessories and nail-polish to check if the colour is right for you before taking the plunge with investment pieces.

Okay - maybe not sunburnt people. Or Oompa Loompas. So make that nearly everyone.

Clinical Essentials - In the bag!

So...it's Monday. AGAIN! Why do Mondays come around seemingly more often than Fridays?!

Anyway... again this is not your usual what's-in-the-bag post. S & I have discussed on many occasions how difficult it is to find a good bag with enough pockets and compartments to take to the hospital every day (whilst not breaking your back).

Behold - my current daily bag:

Mind you, it's taken a year to work out what to bring and what not to. It's also taken a year to work out that bringing a larger bag is not exactly practical at most times, especially when you don't have a locker or a safe place to put it!

So, to help S (who is obsessed with finding *the perfect* bag) & anyone else hunting for a clinical bag, we've taken some of the work out of the search for you. Some may be more in the dream-bag price category, but others are definitely within our grasp! We've also thrown in a few more colourful options, since black gets rather boring.

Surf's Up

Luxe sportwear seems to be another one of those strange (yet insanely cool) trends that's popped up this season. Good thing I invested in some runners and a spanky new sports jacket (to be shown off later).

Thanks to Josh Goot, Camilla & Marc and the rest of the gang who've jumped on the neoprene band-wagon, wetsuit-esque shapes have made their way into the hearts of bloggers all over the Australia; which is why I was so stoked when I found this top on sale at Zara in Shanghai! It's also white - one of the colours I swore I'd wear more of this year.

Looking like something out of the grudge in that photo on the right according to Simon.

Speedy DIY Silk Skirt

As I have mentioned about a million times before, silk is a slight obsession of mine. Add to that I'm a material snob & compulsive op shopper... which brings me to today's DIY!

I picked up this (very ugly & dated) granny dress for $5 purely because the fabric was so beautiful, but without knowing what I'd do with it.

How to?

A quick glance at the waist seam showed it was completely choppable, so I just chopped off the top very neatly and tidied up the edges. Fastest silk midi skirt creation ever.

DIY Fringed Silk Singlet - Fringe Benefits Part 1

Fringes have been making their way around the fashion traps this past season - just peruse collections by Missoni, Sass & Bide, and more local talent like Poppy Lissiman for example.

Keep on scrolling down to check out another easy(ish) DIY project to try out!

DIY Fringed Silk Singlet

What You'll Need:
Appropriate amount of silk to make a singlet (unless you want to take the quick way and just add the fringing to a pre-made singlet) - we used 1 metre of 1.2m width material to make 2 singlets
Sewing kit
Tracing paper and pencil
Chalk
Fringe trim

Step 1:
Get your pattern sorted!
We used another singlet and traced it to get our shape. In hindsight, we probably should have not made it the same on the back, but we can tweak that the next time around. You could buy a pattern or google around for one as well.

Step 2:
Chalk it on (fabric markers or pencils run the risk of staining the delicate silk) then cut it out.

Step 3:
Stitch up the neckline and arm holes (next time we'd use bias tape) then do up the side seams.
Steph & I hand-sewed the lot since my mum's crappy sewing machine will maul just about anything.

Step 4:
Hem, then hand-stitch or machine on your fringing to the bottom of your singlet. You can do two rows (see the singlet with the red trim) if the fringing is sparse to give it a fuller effect.

Step 5:
Give your singlet a good iron, et voila!

For shorter option, give your singlet a generous crop before stitching on the trim:

I suppose it was only a matter of time until the (fashion) world got sick of bright colours... which explains the birth of pastel-blocking, if that's even the term! This editorial starring Magdalena Frackowiak is my favourite example of grown up pastels for cool weather.

As often happens, I go from having none of a certain item (e.g. playsuits) to plenty in a short space of time. Since I sat on my last sunglasses late last year (cheap ones from Bali), I had been seriously lacking in the eyewear department.

Since then, I've managed to collect 3 pairs - one "proper" and 2 super cheap - but all quite different shapes.

New Year's Resolutions: Get Fit

I need to get fit.

Which is exactly why I bought these.

2 and a half weeks of sitting on a bus, eating junk food every day did nothing for me in China, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy some running shoes whilst in Malaysia. Lunarglide 3's for about $100 Aussie dollars? A total steal! (yup, shopping in Malaysia is CHEAP.)

Hopefully the funky blue colour will get me motivated to go for a jog after I get home from uni this year - I'll definitely be needing it to de-stress. (although S might argue that I'm not exactly a stress-head at all.) Maybe I'll also achieve what we refer to as the "beach babe" body in time for next summer, seeing as I totally bypassed it this year.

Uni is starting for S & I on Monday- everyone says it's the hardest year of our course, so wish us luck as we battle through!

DIY Tassel Earrings

Here's some tassel earrings we made yesterday during our crafternoon (more DIYs to show from that soon!). I picked up a pack of tassels from a small shop in mum's hometown whilst we were in Malaysia, but I'm sure it'd be relatively easy to find similar ones here in Perth.

Geneva from A Pair & A Spare made similar ones ages ago which you can see here (click around her site to check out more in different colours!!). In our reincarnation of her lovely DIY, I've used hooks instead of studs, and sewn on the tassel to make it a more permanent creation. I personally like the studs more, but I already had some gold hooks and they still look okay!

What you'll need:

Tassels - get longer ones like Geneva's to give a more dramatic effect!

Earring hooks

Needle and thread

Whilst keeping the knot to make the tassel secure, chop off the bit which you use to hang up the tassel. Stitch it securely behind the body of the tassel-head, and sew on the earring hook as well.

You could put a spot of superglue onto the knot, just to make it extra secure if you like.

Et voila!

Team it with a day-time outfit to add a bit of colour, or wear it as a moustache.

Breezy Stroll

Yesterday PX & I went for snacks at Greens & Co and then a leisurely stroll around Lake Monger to try out his new (very heavy) camera. It was so so so windy and I spent the whole time holding my silk maxi skirt down or standing against the breeze to create "pants" or trying to get my hair out of my face for fear of looking like Cousin It!

A Lovely Girl

The styling encapsulates one of my favourite styles, which I have named expensive-casual... it is so much more logical than expensive-black-tie. I mean, why spend $500 on a dress for one night when you buy your every day wear from [insert cheap quality shop here]? Totally illogical. Let's start an expensive-casual-revolution!

Summer Hair Solutions

It is SO SO HOT today in Perth... Ughh. Wearing hair out is not an option.

Thanks to my *ahem* slight obsession with silk scarves (or silk in general), combined with my hair's passion for the wild-whiplashed-out-of-control style, this is a hairdo I like to take advantage of regularly.

(The background of these photos is just screaming: Clean your desk, S!)

Double-wrap a long thin scarf & finish with a knot or bow on top. I love this one - it reminds me of the H&M Garden Collection!

A basic headband from Lovisa for a girly girl.

A little polka dot scarf can add a retro touch to a plain outfit.

On our city walks, Simon & I sometimes go to David Jones to smell the perfumes. Last time we went, I took a liking to the Jo Malone and the L'Occitane ranges, and I've finally pin-pointed why. The scents are uncomplicated, clean and fresh - something which is perfect for the heady Summer we're in here in Perth. So as a tribute to clean and simple smells, here's a collage featuring some scents that I'd like to eventually smell/own/collect:

These photos are fuelling my perfect-white-shirt hunt which is currently failing. I've long been a fan of the white shirt + whacky bottoms combination. (i'm talking about whacky as in bizarre, not like... whack your bottom. Awks)

I kind of wanted to make white our Colour of the Month for January... but then realised the "Le" in our header will be invisible haha! Anyway, T is the header-changer around here & she's still bloomin' overseas! So yellow lives on.

With my mother-dear being the Queen of Op shopping (aka thrifting), we managed to visit the op shop in about every Tasmanian town we came across. One little score was this huge silk shirt... I am not one to pass up anything silk in a good shade!

Problem
How to rejuvenate a shirt that was far too big + had grandma sleeves + a daggy flowery collar?

Answer
1. Cut off the sleeves...
2. Cut off the collar...
3. Wear it back to front!

Freshening Up

DIY Your Own Mini Skirt

Hemming; a sure-fire way to breathe new life into a thrifted skirt. This long turquoise one was such a beautiful colour that T encouraged me to splash out and buy it for a huge $6, despite it being way below my knees originally.

I originally intended to wear it in a Gucci colour blocking-type way (e.g. here) but it doesn't look too bad with this basic Dotti tshirt I picked up for $10 in the sales.

We seriously have no blank walls in my house... so the roof it is for photos!

In this hot Perth weather, it's a tease to reminisce about the nice cold south that is Tasmania. (Northern hemisphere inhabitants are probably laughing at that statement, but it's all relative!!) Madewell's Spring 2012 collection is utter perfection. I love when a collection seems to read my mind... how did they know I want to wear spots, pastels, brights, midi lengths, slouchy tops, stripes, belts & messy tailoring? (if that's not an oxymoron)

Not to mention brunettes with messy hair. Now that is something I can relate to.

2012 Style

Happy New Year!

While I do enjoy a bit of serious resolution-making, January 1 is also a suitable time to make style or wardrobe resolutions. T & I both have aspirations to free our wardrobes of some of their weight this year.

Some tips to help us on our quest:

1. Be a material snob. Natural fibres feel nicer, look better and are just...better! Replacing your synthetic items with silk, cotton and cashmere is a quite a financial commitment. (Wow this is sounding deadly serious)

2. Think of your wardrobe space as a place for privileged items. Do those cheap flip flops deserve to take up room in your wardrobe when everything is so squished?

3. Look at some similar items: would one versatile item do the job of these 3 mediocre items?

4. Pre-season planning & wishlisting. Ohmygosh. Can't believe I just verb-ised a noun. And again.

DIY Ruby Slippers

Inspired by the slippers below from CocoRosa & also these from Wittner and these from J Crew, I decided to test drive T's glitter shoe instructions. (See here & here)

She has a habit of making tricky things look like a piece of cake and I, well... I walk into door frames!

So if I can do it... anyone can!!

DIY RUBY SLIPPERS

The red slippers were on sale from Dotti for $30 - cheap enough to risk DIY failure, and made out of a good felt material to hold the glue & glitter.

Tools

PVA glue found in my little brothers' craft box - it worked just fine! No need for fancy fabric glue.

Coarse and fine red glitter. I was instructed by T that this is crucial to getting coverage & sparkle at the same time.

Mix into a paste...

Slather all over the shoe, trying to keep it even & well covered.

Once you have covered it in glitter, I found out it is super duper important to go over it all and ensure the glitter is sitting flat & even. This is especially important if you chose very coarse glitter, like I did.

Last, all the edges need to be evened over & the excess scraped off.

Then wear them!!

So... the verdict? Any semi crafty girl (or glitter-lovin' boy) can try this glitter project. It is simple & requires just a little bit of patience and a lot of glitter.

Never Enough Sparkle

NYE is without a doubt the best occasion to crack out the glittery shoes/dress/anything. That's not to say that every normal day is also a very valid occasion!

DIY Braided Crop-Top

That's right - it's another t-shirt re-vamp DIY project! This time, it was inspired by the braided jumper seen on Hanneli's blog here. As I didn't have any old jumpers to use at my disposal, I again raided my stash of American Apparel t-shirts (see my last DIY project for another way to cut up a shirt!). Go ahead - scroll down for some instructions on how to make this braided crop top!

DIY BRAIDED CROP-TOP

Things you'll need:

A t-shirt to chop up, good fabric scissors, a sewing kit, and some permanent flexible fabric glue.

Step 1:

Mark out how short you'd like your crop-top to be and chop it! I also decided to take the sleeves in. Hem that puppy.

Step 2:

Cut the part of the t-shirt you cut off into 1-inch-wide strips. Give each of them a pull length-wise to curl the strips inwards like the piece on the right below. Then braid the strips and secure the ends with a small stitch.

Step 3:

Place and pin your braids where you'd like them to be, then start gluing them onto the shirt. Make sure you protect the inside of the shirt by putting a piece of cardboard inside.

Step 4:

Finish the ends of each braid neatly by cutting and folding the ends in, then stitching them to the shirt securely. Leave the glue to dry overnight...

... et voila!

Your new crop-top with braid embellishments - you could even include beads or diamante chains into your braids for a bit more of a statement piece! Other things you could do could be to change the position of the braids around to create other shapes like a harness or a statement neckline or sleeves.

A fresh & clear face with either doll-like lashes or bright lips is a pretty easy-to-replicate makeup look if you have a good mascara and of course (my favourite) shockingly bright lipstick like this.

DIY Sparkly Nails

Never one to be left out of a craze, I thought I'd try my hand at a DIY glittery manicure just in time for Christmas!

I read a million different methods, but most of them made it sound MUCH more complicated than it really is. A few bloggers poured half the clear polish out of the bottle & tipped the glitter in, but that sounded like a bit of a drastic measure to me. (Although, it may be more secure & I probably shouldn't speak too soon!)

A couple of Instagram photos. That app is so addictive.

How to?

I simply painted on the clear polish, poured on a huge mountain of glitter, tapped off the excess, et voilà, glittery nails!

You can paint clear nail polish over the top to ensure it stays put & improve the texture. I didn't because mine was just a trial - I'll do a proper version tomorrow so it's fresh for Christmas day.

The Clash

One day I will get sick of clashing bright colours... but it won't be soon, I don't think!

This pink shirt is getting a serious work-out due to being perfectly halfway between tailored & over-sized, and (of course) made out of the vibrant hot pink silk material. These pants on the other hand look like they were harvested from a criminal's jump-suit... but I still love them.

I'd probably wear this combination with neutral sandals or wedges and minimal jewellery, as it's shocking enough already without adding anything sparkly.

I hope you're all surviving the crazy mad rush before Christmas! And T, if you read this, I hope you're not dying of hypothermia (yet!).

One Day

That's how long a whole gingerbread house lasts in our house before it is completely destroyed (eaten).
We used a pre-cut gingerbread set from Ikea & it is actually delicious... also much much easier than making from scratch.

Voila! After much trial & tribulation, it was done.

But look! It didn't even last long enough for a photo. (See the left side of the roof?)

Time to eat!

T & I had a lovely lazy Sunday catch up yesterday with some blogging girls, kindly hosted at L's Fairy Nest. It was so good to catch up & chat with them all again before Christmas!

As we speak, T is jet setting off to China so it's going to be all meee for a few weeks. But don't fret- she has left some DIYs & other goodies in case you get sick of S ;)

Springy Spots & Stripes

Sonia Rykiel is one of my favourite designers at the moment... My relatively-recently acquired top sent me on a wild rampage of her website, looking intently at the latest collection.

Compared to other designers in the same league, not many are as youthful & cheerful as this one. It reminds me to dress young while I'm still well under the hill, if that phrase even exists.

Oh Sun Fei Fei (or Fei Fei Sun, if you'd like to ignore how Chinese last names really go first), my favourite Asian model. Yeah, Du Juan my previous number-one spot holder has been trumped, finally, by Fei Fei. She makes me wish I had a true monolid...

Does anyone know where I can get a good lip stain in that colour?

DIY Yellow Rose Headband

I seriously love yellow & have no idea why people don't wear it more often! There really is a shade for everyone - from pastel to mustard. This length of trimming from Spotlight kind of jumped out at me before I even knew yellow would be our December colour!!

This is a DIY for people with only $5 and 5 minutes to spare.

5 minute $5 DIY

Instructions
(it is very complex- pay attention!)
1. Find a length of trimming & buy it.
2. Take it home. (I don't want to be blamed for an epidemic of people doing DIYs in the shop!)
3. Wrap it around your head.
4. Bobby pin it at the nape of your neck.
5. Tease or mess up your hair a bit - style as you like!

Review: Kev and his Colour Bugs

Your eyes were never meant to see these sneaky photos that T took of me after what we will now call The Colour Bug Incident, but there are two reasons they're here anyway:

1. The colours turned out super cool & who knew the towel would match the hair and the lipstick. Oh Sheriden, you're such on trend colour-wise.

2. We promised you holiday insanity, and these odd facial expressions deliver the goods!

(seriously cannot believe i'm letting these go on ze internet)

Colour Bug Review

T & I (and my sister actually) well and truly built up these colour bugs. The whole way through exams we were looking forward to trying it out - so perhaps keep this in mind when reading our review!

We bought pink & orange @ $24.95 each.

We watched his video & followed his instructions, but the colour bug just did not give the intense colour we were looking for. On both my medium-brown and T's very dark brown locks, the colour was more like a tint. This could be due to not using Kevin Murphy products on our hair before application or something else, who knows, but between the both of us we used a lot of different products and it just wouldn't stay put.

The colour turned out pretty cool & we had a lot of fun trying it out, but... overall we found the colour bug much more difficult to use and fiddly than what it looks like on the video. Not to mention the whole bathroom was pink afterwards and it would not stop shedding all through the night!! Also - more than half was used on just one occasion...

Would we recommend this product?

Yes... if you have light hair, a lot of patience & an industrial strength vacuum for your bathroom, this is something that could work for you. (Just see Kim's results, which are pretty darn sweet). However, T managed to get a similar result with some cheapo coloured hairspray ($6 vs $25) - it was just as messy to apply but much nicer on the pocket, with many more applications possible.

I guess we'll just have to commit and dye our hair the old fashion way, eh?

Cable-Knit

Going to China in 9 days!!

It'll be freezing, and I still lack a good knitted jumper (how this is possible after 3 years of holidays in cold places defeats me). Ideally, I'd like to pick one up like this Madewell cable knit - everyone knows it's so hard to find something akin to this in Perth.

I can't wait to go - does anyone have any must-see places to visit in Beijing or Shanghai?

DIY Convertible Clasp Singlet

American Apparel has this pretty sweet deal where you can get 10 not-so-perfect t-shirts for $50. Honestly, I haven't really found anything major that makes these shirts not perfect, so it's great to have a heap of random colours for DIY projects such as these!

DIY CONVERTIBLE CLASP SINGLET

Enter le boring cotton crew-neck:

Step 1:

I decided that I wanted a baggy oversized singlet to beat the heat, so I did a bit of chopping. It'd probably be better if you trace out an old singlet, to avoid cutting the neckline too low. Chop off the neck and the sleeves, as well as the bottom hem if you like.

Step 2:

Give the cut edges a pull, so that the material curls in on itself.

I ended up pulling it a bit much and wore the straps down to thin! So from here on, it was pretty much improvised...

Step 3:

Separate the straps and sew on a jump ring to each of the front straps, and a clasp for each of the back straps.

Et voila!

This is how your strap should look:

Style it:

Now the beauty of it is that you can play switcheroo with the straps to change the look of your top! Wear it as a plain singlet, knot the straps, or cross them over:

Here's a few possibilities I tried:

Too easy, right? When I come back from my holiday, I might try making one out of silk - it hopefully should hold the draping just as well and not have as much stretch as the cotton jersey. I'd also like to add some studs to this one, just to see how it goes.

White on White Challenge

Peanut Butter & Nutella Cookies

I did a bit of baking this afternoon, and due to some requests for a recipe for these cookies, here's a post complete with mouth-watering photos :)

Need a bit of a sugar hit?
Try out these Peanut Butter & Nutella Cookies!
(recipe adapted from Back to the Roots)

Muster your ingredients:
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup softened butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla essence
1 1/4 cup plain flour
1/4 cup Nutella
Cream the butter and peanut butter together

Add in the egg then the dry ingredients on low speed until just combined

Mix Nutella in - make sure you maintain the swirls through the mixture!

Roll into 1 inch balls on a sheet (or three) of baking paper, and score with a fork

Add a blob of Nutella on top if you wish...

Pop it in the oven at 190 degrees C and bake for 8-10mins

Remove from oven and cool on tray...

Then transfer to a wire rack for some further cooling!!

Enjoy with a glass of milk :)

Current Hairspiration

When I get ready for early starts at ungodly hours at the hospital, the first thing I neglect on a regular basis would be my hair, which tends to take on a greasy and sad-looking appearance after lunchtime. Well, next year, mark my words, THIS WILL NOT BE SO. I will attempt to look like I've made an effort.

But due to my aversion to brushing my hair, messy-chic will have to do. Which is why I want to make this my go-to hairstyle - the messy beehive with a pony.

Perhaps it'll get me motivated to step out in nicer ensembles, a la J Crew.

Yellow is our colour of the month! So here's a post about one of the very few yellow pieces I own...

It was a scorcher (37 degrees to be exact), but I still chose to wear leather and pants - what on earth was I thinking. At least they were both light-weight pieces, so I stayed somewhat sun-protected and relatively cool! Also, here's my blog-debut of my ASOS laser-cut tee which I bought ages ago. (Had an untoned post-exam belly, so I hadn't worn it yet, until the dreaded gastro struck. What a way to shed a couple of kilos before Dental Dinner...).

If you haven't already guessed from the title colour change, our colour of the month for December is yellow! A perfectly happy colour for the hot summery Christmas we have here in Perth, and a little different from the traditional red and green.

Whilst a COTM-worthy post will be up tomorrow, here's the customary COTM collage, just to get you into the mood. It's starting to heat up here (35 degrees and counting...), so here's some pretty yellow bits and pieces to stay cool:

DIY Inspiration for December

So many hare-brained DIY plans cooking in my head, but not enough resources (well, cheap resources which would justify me making most of these. Back to trawling on eBay...). Anyway, here's a selection of potential pieces I would like to roll out sometime over the holidays and into next year!

BLUE BEAD NECKLACE

Too easy - it's so similar to what I've made before.
Now to hunt down the appropriate beads! Blue and gold (or anything and gold really...) is my favourite combination, so I'd do all the fixings in my favourite metal.

I've wanted to make something out of ostrich feathers for such a long time. I think the way to approach this one will be to find (or make) a plain base item like a skirt or a slip dress in a non-stretch fabric, then hand-sew or glue each row of feathers down. Perhaps I'll try the skirt first, just to gauge how much feather trim I need...

Let's hope these DIYs get off the ground this time!

DIY Vintage Dress De-Sleeving

You're going to have to believe me when I tell you this vintage dress came with daggy half-way-to-elbow-length sleeves that cut off all circulation to my hands! Unfortunately I didn't take any before pictures, but I captured my little sister to take some after shots on the roof!

How to de-sleeve?

Cutting the sleeves off a vintage dress or top is a quick & easy way to modernise it. I just unpicked the sleeve hem, hand stitched some bias tape onto the raw edge and finished it off by sewing the tape inside the sleeves. After a quick iron, it's ready to wear!!

You are definitely best off looking up some proper instructions if you haven't sewn much before, but if you have any experience doing simple hemming & needle work, then this is definitely a quick job.

I want a hat for summer. Preferably a straw one, with some sort of brim. Simon has a hand-woven straw hat like this, but it's an expensive collector's piece, so obviously I won't be borrowing that.

The hat-interest was sparked after the Beaufort Street Festival, where there were plenty of trendy hats abound.

Yup, even that dog has a trendier hat than me.

Some temple-topping options:

Perhaps a classic fedora?

Or a floppy wide-brim?

Perhaps I should substitute a hat with a parasol?

Perhaps not, for the chance of looking like an absolute fob with an umbrella is very high.

Perhaps a cute boater?

This one is my favourite!

Alas, for now I'll have to stick to a dorky cap à la Dad until I find a woven-straw solution to my sun problems.

Nothing beats a good digital print.

Especially when it's by local talent - Poppy Lissiman!
(and to think, she's only a year older than S & I. What a gun.)

If you cast your mind back to this post, then you would have already picked up on the vibe that I have a thing for Poppy's designs. Really, I've liked them for a while now, but was blown away by her current Pantonia collection which hit the Australian fashion week circuit a few months ago. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it to the designer collections show at PFF this year...

Anyway, I've had my eye on this top in this print for a good 3 months now. It's my official post-good-exam-results-present-to-myself (no... that other stuff from the S&B sale didn't count). As cranky-liscious as I look in the photos below, I actually do love the top, and cannot wait to debut it somewhere!

Photos are by my little brother - the newest member of my family to be sucked into an interest for photography. The ~~raging hipster~~ kid has already started a tumbr. I wish I was that cool when I was fifteen.

Although it isn't silk (and therefore has a mind of its own thanks to static electricity), I'm pretty sure the eye-catching print and floaty dipped-hem makes up for it! FYI, the print has also been reincarnated into a selection of dresses and skirts, some complete with fringing and electro-pop-hued lace. If you haven't already seen the photos from the Pantonia campaign, Poppy's got a few other cool prints on rotation as well - perfect for some print-on-print clashing.

Meet Alushia-Sanchia, the lady behind the beautiful jewellery line of the same name.
(No, she wasn't hiding in the bag)

S & I were surprised by an email that dropped into our inbox a couple of months ago regarding a competition on Oracle Fox that I had entered, informing us that we had won a voucher for Alushia-Sanchia Jewellery. Things got lost somewhere in translation, but we were eventually able to meet up with Alushia herself to banter about her work and inspirations, after the realisation that she lived only a couple of streets away from S!

Alushia's Native American inspired pieces in her Spring-Summer collection feature intricate resin inlays and ethically-sourced turquoise and black onyx. As she said, it's not a beautiful business, but it can be done beautifully. (With the most beautiful results! Continue scrolling...)

Alushia explained to us some of the complexities in the process of turning one of her designs into reality. Let's just say that it is not as easy as drawing a picture and sending it off to the magical jewellery-makers.

Of course, Alushia has had years of experience behind her, having studied it in Sydney. With an inspired sense of imagination and a love for the technicality behind her work, it would be hard to imagine her collection to emerge any less stunning.

More DIY statement necklaces!

You might have noticed already that S and I like our statement neck-bling - especially when we have a stab at making them ourselves (see here, here and here). Here are some photos of my latest batch of necklaces, which I made last Sunday, whilst sleepy Simon was having an afternoon nap.

CLEAR ROCK CRYSTAL & GOLD CHAIN NECKLACE

The first of the lot was inspired by a necklace I had seen on Gossip Girl a while back, by Stephen Dweck (see it here). Forget Serena or Blair's style - my favourite person to get jewellery inspiration from on the show is Lily. I sometimes re-watch episodes purely to get some necklace inspiration.

Obviously I didn't buy enough clear rock crystals (my maths failed me somewhere in the conversion from mm to inches), so I improvised with some gold jump-rings to make the strand a little nicer.

A bit fiddly to put together - the crystal beads are heavy so the nylon kept slipping out of my hands! I resorted to using some artery forceps to keep them at bay (and to also practise my surgeon knotting skills haha).

How do you like it? I reckon it looks pretty cool when the light catches the clear beads and they glow. (Just like this)

FROSTED GREEN AGATE STRAND NECKLACE

The second necklace is made out of a strand of frosted green agate beads, which I just re-strung and attached a clasp to. Continue scrolling down for some blatant cam-whoring.

GOLD & GREEN AVENTURINE GRADUATED BEAD NECKLACE

The third one I made out of aventurine beads and gold jump-rings as spacers. It took me longer to sort the beads into size than to string up the lot!

Unfortunately the beads don't sit as nicely as they do in the photos - I'll probably have to take them off and re-string them again once I work out how to keep them from sticking up haphazardly.

Then I had time so I made this too.

(Just kidding, I bought it at the Sass & Bide sale I was slaving away at last week. Who knew that hanging up clothes for 11 hours was so tiring.)
$220 down to $30? Don't mind if I do.

S's Burgeoning Playsuit Collection

In the space of a week, my playsuit collection expanded from zero to three! By accident! Okay, maybe buying this one on Asos wasn't quite an accident... but it now turns out I have a new Summer uniform.

It goes:

Hat + sunnies + playsuit + sandals

Just add a few accessories and you're all set and ready to go!

I loooove coral & turquoise together. The brown leather & wood accents make it a little less kiddy and a bit more grown up. I'm still trying to convince people I'm older than my little sister!

DIY Leather Strap Bracelets

As soon as I saw this quick & easy DIY bracelet made by the talented Marusya over at CrashingRed, I was inspired to try my hand at one of my own.

Off to Spotlight I went to collect materials: 1m leather strap & the appropriate beads was all I needed!! It totalled under $10 all up... bargain! Wow! So! Many! Exclamation! Marks!

I cut the leather into 4 lengths, plenty long enough to wrap around my wrist & knot. I then just threaded on the desired amount of beads onto each leather strap and added one extra "spacer" bead to have at the end of the thread before the knot. (see picture below)

Voilà! Bracelet already made!

NOW for the hard part... getting someone to tie all the strands together onto your wrist without the little end-beads running towards the middle. Try it & you will see!

(I used three strands; odd numbers of things look so much better!)

The finished product is a quick & easy addition to a raging arm partay.

You could even make a single strand (like my left over strand below) & use it as a quick little gift for a trendy friend! Alternatively, your little brother's horse (named chocolate cake) could wear it as a necklace. Your choice.

Minty Fresh

If you remember, our November COTM is mint green; a beautiful, unusual colour that is perfect for Spring.

I'm currently becoming a HUGE green fiend (mint, emerald, chartreuse, turquoise, you name it) & have been spotting green gems willy-nilly. It seems my mother has even caught on, with her spotting this beautiful mint green silk maxi skirt in an op shop last week.

Green? Sheer silk? Maxi skirt?

Seriously, she has a gift that mother of mine. Pretty much my ideal garment.

Bare Necessities

Seeing other bloggers' make up posts always interest me, because with so many products on the market beauty-wise, it's impossible to try them all. Recommendations are definitely the way to go. Now I'm no beauty connoisseur (no way Jose, far from it!) but I'm sure you love a good ramble.

Clinique moisturiser (Moisture Surge) & Foundation (anti-blemish solutions):
After many a bad experience with mean makeup counter bullies (especially YOU clinique!) I have changed to buying my Clinique products online at StrawberryNet when the colour is in stock or when here is a Gift-With-Purchase deal on. The foundation gives good coverage with no cakey-ness and comes in a nice light colour for wee Irish lasses with fair skin, as S(inead) & I both well know.

Napoleon Brushes
I must admit these were a birthday gift- I could never afford such lovely brushes!
Good quality akeup brushes definitely make applying makeup more fun & precise, and I have been told by Miss R that Eco Tools is not a bad brand for a kiddies with no money (i.e. me) to look into.

Chanel eye palette
SOO GOOOD!!! Makes doing smoky eyes so much easier when you have all the ingredients in one little box.

A watch??! What is that doing there. It was feeling left out, the poor sod.

Hourglass Aura Lip Stain in Flush
I read ZERO reviews before a trip to Mecca on the day of the ball to buy a lip stain & although it is definitely one of my biggest makeup splurges, it has been well worth the money. I don't find it drying at all & can be worn single-layered for day or quintuple-layered for night.

Do any of you use any products you swear by or strongly recommend? Makeup shopping is a wee little ~~addiction~~ hobby of mine.

DIY Wrap Bracelets

More beading! The lack of study and structure to my day has driven me to finding things to do to occupy my time in a productive fashion. I swear, the next step will be whipping out mum's sewing machine and mauling a few things.

For now, however, a quick DIY wrap bracelet that I made for my two besties, S and S(inead). No, I haven't given the bracelets to them yet, but they'll have them in their hot little hands soon.
Add it to a wrap-around arm party with something like this and you've got yourself... a... uh... hmm. No puns come to mind, but you get the drift. It'd look cool.

(P.S. much cheaper than the $18 version from Pigeonhole...)

DIY Plaited Bead Wrap Bracelet

Step 1:
Find yourself some cord. Can be whatever - just make sure it's thin enough to jam some beads or stuff on. I cut mine into 3 lengths of about 50cm, then tied them together 2 inches from one end. Since my cord was prone to fraying, I also sticky-taped the ends (it makes it so much easier to thread beads on).

Step 2:
Get something you want to thread onto the cord. I used tiny gold jump rings for this one, but I also made some with beads. It would look pretty awesome with some gold hex-nuts or washers! Thread a whole heap of them onto each strand.

Step 3:
Secure the end onto something and start plaiting, incorporating a jump ring/bead/etc at regular intervals. I did mine on one side only, every second plait.

Step 4:
Tie the strands together, then tie off the ends.

Ta-daa!

Idiot-proof. Until it comes to figuring out how to tie it on.

Making dinner chez moi is a task of epic proportions & not to be taken lightly. Making bruschetta, in particular, involves cutting up a whole tomato-farm-worth of tomato.

By the way, did you know it is pronounced brusKetta (not brush-etta)? Shall I use this fashion blog as my high horse to teach you all Italian? What a rad idea ;)

Shanghai Nights

One of our lovely friends Jingjing had her belated 21st birthday party the other night (her real birthday was on the day of one of our exams - we hope she made full use of that birthday luck!). It was a real treat - with so much food (as expected of any Asian party) and heaps of friends to catch up with.

DIY Woven Bead Necklace

After a little inspiration from Diva (seen in this post), I decided to try out something similar with a whole lot of beads I bought (initially reserved for S and my craft day, but I couldn't wait that long... We'll have to make a larger more epic version!).

Not too shabby, ey?
Here's another (easy) DIY for you to try - complete with a short video this time!!

DIY Woven Bead Necklace

Step 1:
Rustle up your bits and pieces. I used a full hank of Czech opaque seed beads (really cheap from here if you're a Perth person!), a couple of those hooky things (can't remember the name...), a clasp, some crimps, and some nibs from old pens of all things! (finally, my hoarding of crap pays off for something). I re-inforced the strands of beads with stronger nylon string with the help of Simon.

Step 2:
Time to weave!

Separate your hank into 4 equal parts, then lay them out flat, taping them to the table.
Taking the outermost chunk, weave it through the 3 remaining bead strands like in the first picture.
Then, take the outermost strand from the opposite side from where you started (not counting the one you just wove through), and do the same thing - weaving it through the remaining strands.
Rinse and repeat.

It should look something like this if you use 4 strands!

Step 3:
Once you've finished the weave, it's time to secure the ends. I bunched the ends together then took a thin piece of nylon string and tightly tied it around the end. Then I cut the end of the remaining bead strands to get rid of the extra length. Secure each strand with a crimp to stop the little beads from falling off and rolling all over the floor.

Step 4:
Attach one of those hooky things, then thread the pen nib on to hide the ugly knot! Curl then end of the hooky thing into a circle, and attach your clasp to this.

Et voila!
Not bad, right?

Style it with a button-up shirt, with the necklace just peeking out from below :)
