Backstage at PFF 2013: WA Designer Collections

PFF2013 (14 of 45).jpg

We are already reaching the half-way point in the Perth Fashion Festival & what a treat it has been so far!  Yesterday marked the first of two shows we are covering both backstage & on the runway, so to start things off here is a glimpse of some behind-the-scenes action which was brewing for the WA Designer Collections.  We were interested in how Brad Ngata for L'Oreal Professionnel would tackle the task of coming up with a look to suit the dozen or so distinct collections which would be sent down the runway.

The answer?

Braids!

Created in three different variations on the theme, Brad explained that braids were interesting & versatile, but neutral enough to suit the range of designers on show.  Check out the rest of the photos below to see how braids were interpreted for the runway, & check back in at midday for S's runway report!

Look 1, which Bianca dubbed the "horseshoe" look featured a U-shaped row of multiple braids with the ends tucked in on themselves.  Hair was prepped with a bit of volumiser since it wasn't to be slicked back, & the centre-parting added a distinctive milk-maid-esque feel.  This one is something you could try at home!  (The remaining two looks should probably be left for the braiding aficionados...)

Look 2 was a twist on the classic cornrows, with the general shape & aesthetic reproduced not by traditional braids but rather by tying the hair off in 1-inch sections.  The hair was again prepped with volumiser, sectioned, then tied off in a brick-laying pattern.  The ends were then twisted & pinned into a classic chignon to complete the look.

Look 3 was also a take on the cornrows, but instead of a full head of braids (reminiscent of the good old Bali travel tradition) the sides of the face were bordered by slicked-down hair.  Five small Dutch braids were created from the crown to the nape, where they were tied off then incorporated into a braided chignon.

All the looks were completed with makeup by Lauren Wood, featuring a graphic black & white eyeliner feature with a matte pink lip.  Both hair & makeup were functional enough to last through the multitude of outfit changes - what a feat!

(and now to finish off, here's some backstage candids)

  3. Hate to break it to you but Brad didn't design these looks - I did :) That's my moodboard in shot. I chose three looks that they then replicated - pretty sure all the other project managers did the same. No doubt though that L'Oreal did an amazing job executing the looks to brief.
